Martin Nodell
1915–2006
Martin Nodell was an American cartoonist and commercial artist, best known for creating the Golden Age superhero Green Lantern. He was born on November 15, 1915, and passed away on December 9, 2006. Nodell’s path into comics began after studying art, and he initially worked in advertising before breaking into the industry. His signature work appeared in *All-American Comics* and *All-Star Comics*, where he introduced the Emerald Knight. He also contributed to *Captain America Comics* and later worked under the pen name Mart Dellon. Nodell’s key collaborators included writers Bill Finger and Alfred Bester, with whom he co-created the Green Lantern mythos. His artistic style was defined by clean, dynamic linework and a flair for dramatic, pulp-inspired storytelling. In his later life, Nodell returned to commercial art and teaching, leaving a lasting legacy as a foundational figure in superhero comics. He was recognized with an Inkpot Award for his contributions to the medium.
