Lew Sayre Schwartz was an American comic book artist, filmmaker, and educator, best known for his ghost work on DC Comics' Batman from the mid-1940s into the early 1950s. Born Lewis Sayre Schwartz on July 24, 1926, in an unspecified location, he died on June 18, 2011. His path into comics began as a ghost artist for Bob Kane, drawing Batman stories in *Batman*, *Detective Comics*, and *World's Finest Comics*. With writer David Vern Reed, he co-created the villain Deadshot. Schwartz's signature style blended clean, dynamic linework with a cinematic flair, reflecting his later work in film. In 1961, he co-founded the film company Ferro, Mogubgub and Schwartz, which created the innovative title sequence for Stanley Kubrick's *Dr. Strangelove*. He also taught at the School of Visual Arts in the early 1960s and produced a documentary about cartoonist Milton Caniff in 1981. Schwartz received an Inkpot Award in 2002 and four Emmy Awards. His son, Jed Schwartz, is an animator, and his grandson, Christian Schwartz, is a type designer.
