Jim Woodring was born on October 11, 1952, in the United States. He is best known for his dreamlike, wordless comics featuring the anthropomorphic character Frank, set in a surreal universe he calls the Unifactor. Since childhood, Woodring has experienced hallucinatory visions, and he keeps an "autojournal" of his dreams, which often inspire his work. His art is deeply influenced by Vedanta, a school of Hindu philosophy, and he has cited the cartoon *Bimbo's Initiation* as foundational to his worldview.

Woodring entered comics in the mid-1980s, contributing to independent anthologies before launching his own magazine, *Jim*, which became a showcase for his distinctive vision. His signature style blends meticulous linework with fluid, organic forms, creating a world that feels both alien and intimate. He has collaborated with publishers like Dark Horse, writing for licensed franchises such as *Aliens* (notably *Aliens: Kidnapped* and *Aliens: Labyrinth*), while also producing fine art and toy designs.

His Frank stories and *The Book of Jim* were both ranked on *The Comics Journal*’s list of the 100 best comics of the century. Woodring remains active, continuing to explore the boundaries of visual storytelling with a singular, introspective voice.
