Greg Hildebrandt
Born on January 23, 1939, in Detroit, Michigan, Greg Hildebrandt was one half of the famed Brothers Hildebrandt, a collaborative duo with his twin brother Tim. The pair became synonymous with fantasy and science fiction art, producing iconic movie posters, book covers, calendars, and trading cards. Greg passed away on October 31, 2024.
Greg’s path into comics began through his partnership with Tim, and their work together defined a generation of fantasy illustration. He is best known for his lush, detailed style, often rendering heroic figures and mythical landscapes with a painterly warmth. Key collaborators included his brother Tim, as well as writers and editors on projects like *Marvel Illustrated: Treasure Island* and *The New Adventures of Terry & the Pirates*. Notable co-creations include the enduring poster for *Star Wars* (1977) and the *Lord of the Rings* calendar series, though his comic credits also span *Heavy Metal Special Editions*, *Superman: The Last God of Krypton*, and *Warlord of Mars Attacks*.
Later in life, Greg continued to work independently after Tim’s death in 2006, contributing to art books and special editions. His legacy is that of a master illustrator who helped define the visual language of modern fantasy. He received multiple Hugo Awards for Best Artist and a Chesley Award for lifetime achievement.
