Fred Hembeck was born on January 30, 1953, in the United States. He is best known as a cartoonist whose affectionate parodies of mainstream comic book characters—drawn with his trademark curlicues at the elbows and knees—appeared for decades in the very publications whose icons he spoofed. Hembeck often inserted himself into his work as a self-deprecating interviewer, chatting with superheroes and villains alike. His path into comics began in the late 1970s, and his distinctive, rubbery style became a fixture in fan-favorite titles such as *Marvel Age*, *Comics Buyer's Guide*, *Marvel Tales*, and *The Comics Journal*. He collaborated most notably with editors and writers at Marvel and DC, though his work remained largely a solo affair of writing, drawing, and lettering. Hembeck’s co-creations include his own recurring gag strips and the long-running "Fred Hembeck Sells the Marvel Universe" series. Later in life, he continued to contribute to fanzines and online platforms, maintaining a loyal following until his final published work in 2022. While he never received major industry awards, his influence is felt in the generations of cartoonists who embraced humor and meta-commentary in superhero comics.
