An American cartoonist, he is best remembered for creating the long-running newspaper comic strip *Moon Mullins*, which debuted in 1923 and continued until 1991. Willard sometimes used the nickname "Dok Willard." He worked closely with assistant Ferd Johnson on the strip. In the database, Willard is credited as an artist, inker, letterer, and writer on 12 issues from 1931 to 1948, with his most-credited titles including *Moon Mullins*, *Four Color*, *Large Feature Comic*, *Merry Christmas from Sears Toyland*, and *The American Legion*.
