François Walthéry
1946–
François Walthéry was born on 17 January 1946 in Belgium, and over a career spanning more than five decades he established himself as one of the more enduring figures in the Franco-Belgian comics tradition. His name is most closely associated with Natacha, a series following the escapades of a spirited flight attendant whose adventures carried readers from airport terminals to genuinely exotic corners of the world. Walthéry took on virtually every production role across his extensive output — writing, drawing, inking, coloring, and lettering — with credits across 152 issues and activity documented from 1967 through at least 2025.
His work on Natacha attracted collaborators and the series was published under several language variants, appearing in Dutch as Natasja and in German as Natascha, reflecting the wide European readership it cultivated. Beyond that flagship title, Walthéry contributed to other series including Rubine, Benni Bärenstark, and Starke Staffans äventyr, demonstrating a range that extended well past any single character or market. His draftsmanship sits comfortably within the clear-line school associated with the Belgian tradition, emphasizing clean contours, expressive characters, and vivid color work. Walthéry's longevity in the field — remaining productive into his late seventies — speaks to a sustained creative commitment that younger generations of European cartoonists have continued to acknowledge.
