Donald Southam Lawrence was born on 17 November 1928 in Britain and passed away on 29 December 2003. Over a career spanning several decades, he established himself as one of the most technically accomplished British comic artists of his generation, recognized for a meticulous, realistic draftsmanship that gave his pages an almost cinematic weight.

Lawrence first gained widespread attention through *The Rise and Fall of the Trigan Empire*, a science-fiction strip blending Roman history with futuristic world-building that ran in the British weeklies *Ranger* and *Look and Learn*. Later, he found a second and arguably equally devoted audience in the Netherlands with *Storm*, originally serialized in the Dutch weekly *Eppo* before being collected into album editions and continuing through associated publications including *Sjors & Sjimmie* and *Eppo Wordt Vervolgd*. His catalog across these and related titles extended to credits on some 570 issues.

His influence on subsequent generations proved considerable. Artists including Brian Bolland and Dave Gibbons have cited him as an inspiration, and Chris Weston received direct instruction from Lawrence. His reach extended internationally as well, shaping the work of Indonesian artist Apri Kusbiantoro. Lawrence never needed marketing superlatives — the precision and humanity visible in every panel made the case plainly enough, and his reputation among working professionals remains a reliable measure of his standing.
