Dean Motter
1953–
Dean Motter, born in 1953, is a Canadian illustrator, designer, and writer whose career has spanned Toronto, New York City, and Atlanta. He is best known for creating *Mister X*, a defining "new-wave" comic of the 1980s that showcased his distinctive design sensibility. Before comics, Motter made his mark in music, winning two Juno Awards for album cover designs. His path into the industry began in the mid-1970s, and he has since contributed as an artist, colorist, inker, letterer, and writer across 83 issues. Beyond *Mister X*, his signature works include *Terminal City* and its sequel *Terminal City: Aerial Graffiti*, as well as adaptations of *The Prisoner* and a run on *Hellblazer*. Motter’s style blends architectural precision with noir atmosphere, often collaborating with writers like Michael Lark. His later projects include *Mister X: Razed*, revisiting his most famous creation. While not a frequent award winner in comics, his influence on the medium’s visual storytelling is widely acknowledged. Motter remains active, with credits extending into the 2020s, and his work continues to be studied for its fusion of graphic design and sequential art.
