Dean Haspiel
1967–
Dean Haspiel was born on May 31, 1967, in New York City. He is best known as the creator of the punk-rock antihero Billy Dogma and the supernatural hero The Red Hook, and for his long-running collaboration with writer Harvey Pekar on *American Splendor* and the graphic novel *The Quitter*. Haspiel also worked frequently with Jonathan Ames, illustrating *The Alcoholic* and contributing to the HBO series *Bored to Death*. His bold, expressive linework and kinetic storytelling made him a natural fit for superhero comics, with notable runs on *The Fox*, *The Verdict*, *Startling Stories: The Thing – Night Falls on Yancy Street*, *Fantastic Four*, and *Batman '66*. In addition to his comics work, Haspiel won a 2010 Emmy Award for television design. He has been nominated for multiple Eisner Awards over his career, which spans from 1987 to 2021 across 54 credited issues as artist, colorist, inker, letterer, and writer. Haspiel remains a distinctive voice in independent and mainstream comics, celebrated for his raw energy and deeply personal characters.
