Charles Adlard was born on 4 August 1966 in England. He is best known as the artist who defined the look of *The Walking Dead* for over a decade, his stark black-and-white linework becoming synonymous with the series. Adlard entered comics in the early 1990s, working on titles like *The X-Files* and the superhero series *Shadowman* before finding his signature style in horror and post-apocalyptic storytelling. His collaboration with writer Robert Kirkman on *The Walking Dead* began with issue #7, and he went on to pencil the bulk of the series, creating an atmospheric, gritty world that emphasized mood over flashy detail. He also co-created the series *Savage* with writer Pat Mills, a survivalist tale that showcased his ability to render wilderness and action. Adlard’s work is noted for its expressive, often claustrophobic compositions and his mastery of shadow and texture in black-and-white. He received multiple Eisner Awards for *The Walking Dead*, including Best Continuing Series. Later in his career, he continued to work on creator-owned projects and occasional covers. His legacy is firmly tied to the zombie genre, where his visual storytelling helped transform a cult comic into a global phenomenon.
