Bill Messner-Loebs, born William Francis Loebs Jr. on February 19, 1949, in Michigan, is an American comics writer and artist who blended a Midwestern sensibility with a flair for offbeat, character-driven storytelling. He first gained notice in the 1980s with his creator-owned series *Journey: The Adventures of Wolverine MacAlistaire*, which he both wrote and drew, establishing his reputation for rugged, humanistic adventure. During the 1990s, he wrote for DC Comics on major superhero titles including *The Flash* and *Wonder Woman*, and for Image Comics on *The Maxx*, where he collaborated with creator Sam Kieth. He also contributed to *Superman* and *Adventures of Superman*, and wrote the miniseries *Artemis: Requiem*. His hyphenated surname combines his and his wife Nadine’s unmarried names. Messner-Loebs’s work often balanced quirky humor with genuine pathos, and his creator-owned projects showcased his versatility as both a writer and artist. He remains a respected figure among fans of 1980s and 1990s independent and mainstream comics, known for his distinctive voice and willingness to explore offbeat corners of the superhero genre.
