Alvin C. Hollingsworth, born February 25, 1928, in New York City, was among the earliest Black artists to work in American comic books. He died on July 14, 2000. Active from 1946, he often used the pseudonym Alvin Holly. Hollingsworth is best known for his clean, expressive linework and atmospheric storytelling, contributing as an artist, inker, letterer, and writer across a range of genres. His most credited titles include *Negro Romance*, *Jungle Comics*, *Fight against Crime*, *Crimes by Women*, *Fantastic Tales*, and *Eerie*. He collaborated with publishers such as Fox Feature Syndicate and Avon Periodicals, and his work appeared in the pioneering romance comic *Negro Romance*, which featured Black characters and creators. Beyond comics, Hollingsworth built a distinguished career as a painter and educator, teaching at institutions including the High School of Art and Design and the City University of New York. His fine art explored themes of spirituality and social justice, and his legacy bridges commercial illustration and fine art. While specific major awards are not recorded in available sources, his place as a trailblazing Black creator in a predominantly white industry remains significant.
