Opening night at the theatre turns deadly when actress Louise Baronet is shot dead onstage during a performance of "Love Pirate," leaving the Saint and the police to sift through three suspects: leading man Craig Vincent, chorus girl Kiki Larue, and director August St. John. As the Saint investigates backstage and in the prop room, he uncovers a tangled web of jealousy and thwarted ambition that leads to a tense final confrontation in the darkened theatre. This 1948 mystery proves that the real drama happens behind the curtain.

Flashgun Harper, ace photographer for the Daily Slant, captures a shot before the dedication ceremonies at the new Featherstone Recreation Center—a photo that may prove architect Adam Johnson's innocence when a fire mysteriously breaks out and Featherstone accuses him of arson. Harper sets an elaborate trap using infra-red photography to catch the real culprit and clear Johnson's name, but only after Speed and a bout of hay fever nearly derail his plan.
