Phineas T. Freakers
Phineas T. Freakers is a counterculture everyman who debuted in the underground comix scene via Rip Off Press, inhabiting the same gloriously anarchic world as the Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers — a freewheeling, irreverent corner of 1960s underground publishing far removed from mainstream superhero fare.
Born in the countercultural ferment of 1969, Phineas T. Freakers leapt onto the underground comix scene courtesy of Gilbert Shelton and Lieuen Adkins in Feds 'N' Heads Comics — a Silver Age debut that had nothing to do with capes and everything to do with the gloriously anarchic world Rip Off Press was building on the margins of mainstream publishing. Over a remarkable 54-year run, he's turned up across The Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers, Rip Off Comix, and even the pages of High Times Magazine, keeping wild company with the likes of Fat Freddy Freekowtski, Freewheelin' Franklin Freek, and Wonder Wart-hog. With 47 catalog appearances and at least one key collector issue to his name, Phineas is a genuine fixture of underground comics history — the kind of character who rewards diggers and devotees who know that some of the most enduring figures of the era never wore a mask.
