From 1974 to 2017, High Times Magazine published 106 issues of counterculture comics, blending the magazine’s cannabis-centric ethos with surreal, satirical, and psychedelic storytelling. The series is most closely associated with underground comix legends Bill Griffith, Gilbert Shelton, and Paul Kirchner, whose recurring characters—including Griffith’s Zippy the Pinhead and Shelton’s Freewheelin’ Franklin Freek—became icons of the era. With art by Dave Sheridan and others, these strips gave readers a wild, irreverent escape that reflected the magazine’s rebellious spirit and enduring influence on alternative comics.
