Jon Sable
Jon Sable is a former Olympic athlete and African game tracker whose family was murdered by poachers, driving him to become a ruthless mercenary. To fund a quieter life, he secretly moonlights as a children's book author under a pseudonym.
Born in the Bronze Age pages of Visions #4 (1982) β with Bob Burden among his earliest creative company β Jon Sable has carved out a distinctive corner of comics history across an remarkable span stretching all the way to 2025. He's most at home in the First Comics universe, headlining titles like Jon Sable, Freelance and Mike Grell's Sable, where the "freelance" life clearly suits a character with this kind of enduring, independent spirit. The rarefied company he keeps on the page β from Clark Kent and Bruce Wayne to Tarzan and even the gloriously offbeat Flaming Carrot β tells you immediately that Sable moves in adventurous, eclectic circles. Over four decades of publication, this is a character who has earned his place in any serious Bronze Age collection.
