Who is Iron Man?

Billionaire weapons manufacturer Tony Stark was captured by enemy forces during a demonstration trip to a war zone and suffered a severe chest wound; forced to build a weapon for his captors, he instead secretly constructed a powered suit of armor both to keep his damaged heart beating and to fight his way to freedom, becoming Iron Man.

Few characters embody the ambition and ingenuity of Marvel's Silver Age quite like Iron Man, who burst onto the scene in Tales of Suspense #39 in 1963, conjured by the legendary team of Stan Lee, Larry Lieber, and Don Heck. Over more than six decades — an extraordinary span that stretches from the early 1960s all the way to the present — he has accumulated over 3,000 catalog appearances and a staggering 130 key issues, a testament to just how consistently this character has mattered to collectors and storytellers alike. His home turf spans Iron Man, The Avengers, and beyond, where he shares the page with the absolute cream of the Marvel universe: Captain America, Thor, Spider-Man, and their alter egos Steve Rogers and Peter Parker. If you're building a serious Marvel collection, Iron Man isn't a detour — he's practically the spine of it.

Trivia

  • Marvel pulled no punches in 'Demon in a Bottle,' letting Iron Man spiral into full-blown alcoholism in a move that was unusually frank for a mainstream superhero title of its era.cgmagonline.com
  • Stark's technological ambition eventually outpaced his control when his armor grew sentient and turned hostile, forcing him to battle the very suit he had created.cgmagonline.com
  • Stan Lee has written more of Iron Man's comics than any other writer in our catalog — 173 issues.
