Writer Brian Michael Bendis had introduced Riri Williams in Invincible Iron Man (vol. 3) #7 (May 2016), co-creating her with artist Mike Deodato Jr., before handing the character's solo spotlight to artist Stefano Caselli for the 2016 relaunch. The series was shepherded under Editor-in-Chief Axel Alonso's tenure and positioned squarely within Marvel's post-Civil War II publishing reorganization, which left Tony Stark comatose and opened the Iron Man title for a new lead. Bendis, who had been the steward of the Iron Man line since 2015, personally engineered the transition, ensuring narrative continuity by threading a Tony Stark A.I. — modeled after the original hero's personality and designed to mentor Riri — directly into the first issue. The character of Riri Williams was reportedly inspired visually and in spirit by actress Skai Jackson.
