Who is Dmitri Smerdyakov?

Dmitri Smerdyakov is the Chameleon, a master of disguise and one of Spider-Man's earliest foes. A Soviet spy and half-brother to Kraven the Hunter, he uses costumes and later chemical masks to impersonate anyone, making him a persistent threat to Peter Parker.

A Silver Age creation bearing the fingerprints of Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, Dmitri Smerdyakov made his entrance in 1969 through Editions Lug's Fantask and has kept remarkable company ever since — sharing pages with the likes of Peter Parker, Spider-Man, J. Jonah Jameson, and Flash Thompson across more than five decades of adventures. With appearances spanning Strange, Spider-Man, and Hulk, this character has woven through some of Marvel's most beloved corners of the French-market publishing world, accumulating 26 catalog appearances and three collector-recognized key issues along the way. Fifty-five years is a long time to stay in print, and for fans of Silver Age gems with a distinctly international flavor, Dmitri Smerdyakov is a name worth tracking down.
