Awkwardman
Awkwardman is a founding member of the Inferior Five, a comedic Silver Age team that parodies the superhero genre. True to the team's self-deprecating name, he and teammates like Dumb Bunny and Merryman are well-meaning but hilariously incompetent heroes.
Dreamed up in 1966 by E. Nelson Bridwell, Joe Orlando, and Jerry Grandenetti, Awkwardman is a Silver Age DC original who burst onto the scene in Showcase #62 as a founding member of the gloriously hapless Inferior Five β a team whose very name telegraphs the joke. Sharing adventures with the likes of Dumb Bunny, Merryman, White Feather, and Blimp, he's part of one of comics' most affectionately absurdist ensembles, a loving parody of the superhero boom that surrounded him. His appearances stretch across nearly five decades and pop up in titles as varied as Blackhawk and Batman: The Brave and the Bold, proof that there's a lasting charm to a character built entirely around comic misfortune. For collectors who love the Silver Age's willingness to wink at itself, Awkwardman is an endearing curio well worth tracking down.
