Chester Brown's Yummy Fur (1986–1991, Vortex) began as a raw, surreal anthology before evolving into a landmark of alternative comics. Across its 24 issues, Brown's own stories—featuring the grotesque adventures of Ed the Happy Clown, a strangely human Jesus Christ, and a cast including Ronald Reagan and a fictionalized Chester Brown—shared the page with contributions from Julie Doucet. The series is essential for showcasing Brown's early, unflinching voice and for helping define the offbeat, personal storytelling that characterized the late-80s Canadian indie scene.
