About the series
Toby Press’s Tales of Horror (1952–1954) delivered 13 issues of pre-Code frights, with artists Ben Brown, Bill Molno, and Myron Fass conjuring eerie visuals for a rotating cast of monsters and mad scientists. The series is best remembered for its recurring features: the morbid experiments of Dr. Jonathan Weir and the vigilante exploits of the mysterious Purple Claw. A short-lived but vivid entry in the golden age of horror comics, it captures the raw, unregulated energy of the genre before the Comics Code Authority reshaped the industry.
