Brothers of the Spear

Western · 1972–1982 · 18 issues
About the series

In the early 1970s, the Western Publishing imprint Gold Key revived the classic jungle-adventure duo from the pages of Tarzan, launching Brothers of the Spear as its own 18-issue series. Running through 1982, the title followed the African exploits of the white warrior Dan-El and his native friend, the chieftain's son Kofi, as they faced wild animals and colonial threats. The series is most associated with writer Gaylord Du Bois and the clean, atmospheric art of Jesse Santos and Dan Spiegle, who brought a respectful, adventure-forward sensibility to the pair's bond. It stands as a notable, if lesser-known, entry in the legacy of mid-century American adventure comics.
