At the end of a shipboard romance, Della feels spurned when she tells Sam he loves her, but he can't say it back to her. Now they meet years later with Sam mourning over the death of Mary, who had been driving to Lake City to marry him when her car went off the road. Sam sees Della a lot during the next few weeks and realizes he now does love Della. But then something Della says makes Sam realize that Della knows more about Mary's death than he realized.
