X-Men Unlimited #8
X-Men Unlimited #8 marks the first appearance of Christopher Bradley (later known as Bolt and then Maverick), a teenager with electrical powers whose debut issue doubles as one of the more emotionally grounded uses of the Legacy Virus in 1990s X-Men storytelling. Rather than treating the Virus as superhero backdrop, writer Howard Mackie plants it at the center of a coming-of-age story: Chris trains at the Xavier Institute, bonds closely with Iceman, and then learns — during a routine medical exam — that he has a terminal illness the X-Men cannot cure. The story resonated enough that Chris went on to appear in X-Men Unlimited #15, feature prominently in the Maverick solo series, and eventually join the New Warriors as Bolt, giving this standalone issue an outsize narrative footprint relative to its anthology format.

The issue was produced under editor Kelly Corvese and editor-in-chief Bob Harras, with Howard Mackie writing the lead story 'First Contact.' Penciling duties on the story were split between Dan Lawlis and Tom Grummett, with Ian Akin on inks, Matt Webb on colors, and Richard Starkings and Comicraft lettering; the cover was by Adam Pollina and Ian Akin, while Jeff Matsuda and Ian Churchill contributed pin-ups. X-Men Unlimited functioned as a standalone anthology series exploring character backstories and events peripheral to the main X-Men titles, giving Mackie room for a slower, character-driven origin without crossover obligations. The series had briefly been retitled X-Men Chronicles for the Age of Apocalypse event between issues #7 and #8, making this issue the title's full return to its regular format.

- Bradley's mutant power is control over electricity: he can fire electrical blasts from his hands, surround himself with a bio-electric shield, and when fully powered, his body radiates a blazing aura that makes him appear composed of living electricity.
- The lead story is titled 'First Contact'; its central plot follows Chris manifesting his powers at school, being recruited by Jean Grey and Gambit, bonding with Iceman at the Xavier Institute, and then being diagnosed with the Legacy Virus.
