Jean is piloting a damaged shuttle back to earth when she begins to succumb to deadly radiation. She is possessed by the Phoenix force which allows her to get herself and her friends back home but the experience wipes her out physically. After leaving Jean safely in the hospital, Xavier is attacked mentally by Eric the Red and takes it out on the X-Men by taunting them in his psychic form. Xavier travels to Muir Isle to get checked out by Moira MacTaggert where he meets the girl of his dreams, Lilandra, an alien princess who has stolen the powerful M'Kraan crystal and is fleeing for her life.
