With Jean totally under the control of the Dark Phoenix, the X-Men try to take her down but she is too powerful. Dark Phoenix takes off for the stars and destroys the D'Bari star system and her actions are witnessed by the Shi'ar. Phoenix returns to Earth and visits the home of Jean's parents where the X-Men catch up with her. After Xavier wages a pitched battle with Dark Phoenix on the psychic plane, the alien entity is contained and Jean is restored. The joy is cut short, however, as Lilandra and the Shi'ar Imperial Guard show up and proclaim that Jean and the Phoenix must be destroyed.
