The X-Men are brought before Lilandra and the Shi'ar who proclaim that the Phoenix entity within Jean Grey must be destroyed. Xavier initiates a trial by combat and the X-Men battle the Imperial Guard with Jean's life at stake. The X-Men are quickly dispatched but Jean manifests the Phoenix and attacks. Phoenix allows herself to be shot with a blast that separates her from Jean Grey but Jean doesn't survive. The X-Men each give a small part of their essence to restore Jean to life. The X-Men are returned to Earth and the Phoenix flies off to once again protect the M'Kraan Crystal.
