The issue was scripted by Mark Waid, penciled by Andy Kubert, and inked by Dan Panosian, with Bob Harras serving as editor-in-chief. Onslaught itself was co-created by writers Scott Lobdell and Mark Waid alongside artist Andy Kubert, and the character's origin was deliberately reverse-engineered to support the 'Heroes Reborn' relaunch — a 1996 initiative that handed the Avengers and Fantastic Four titles to former Image Comics creators, requiring a cataclysmic in-continuity event to remove those teams from the main Marvel Universe. The narrative roots of Onslaught stretched back to X-Men #25 (1993) and the 'Fatal Attractions' storyline, in which Xavier telepathically wiped Magneto's mind after Magneto ripped the adamantium from Wolverine's skeleton — a psychic act that allowed the darkest fragment of Magneto's consciousness to merge with Xavier's own long-repressed darkness.
