X-Men #22
X-Men #22 (vol. 6, May 2023) functions as the definitive 'Orchis spotlight' issue in Gerry Duggan's Krakoan-era run, laying out in crystalline detail the full organizational structure and weaponized plans of the anti-mutant organization that would trigger the 'Fall of X.' The issue delivers the first appearance of 'Sentinel Zero' — a nightmarish new breed of Orchis Sentinel built on the chassis of one of Wolverine's own adamantium skeletons — making it a meaningful chapter in the long history of Sentinel evolution in Marvel lore. For Firestar fans, the issue represents a turning point: Angelica Jones, the 2022 reader-vote X-Men election winner who had long been sidelined in the title, finally receives a substantive field spotlight that sets the stage for her secret-agent role at the heart of 'Fall of X.' The issue also contains an in-story data page — the Orchis Protocol — that charts the villain faction's entire chain of command, a rare piece of worldbuilding that rewards careful reading and anchors the catastrophic events of the subsequent Hellfire Gala.

The 2021 X-Men series (vol. 6) was launched as part of the Krakoan era overseen by editor Jordan White, with Gerry Duggan as the sole writer throughout its run. Joshua Cassara, who shared art duties across the series, pencilled and inked this issue while Marte Gracia provided colors. Firestar's prominence in this arc was a direct consequence of Marvel's second annual X-Men fan vote held in January 2022, in which Angelica Jones defeated a field that included Armor, Surge, Siryn, and others; writer Duggan publicly stated that her story was 'exactly what the X-Men will need' for that year. The issue sits at a pivotal structural position in the reading order — immediately before the 'Before the Fall' one-shots and the 2023 Hellfire Gala that kicked off 'Fall of X' — making it one of the last issues in which the Krakoan status quo appears intact before Orchis executes its plan.
