X-Men #1 (2021) marks the formal debut of the first official superhero team of the Krakoan Age — the mutant nation era reshaped by Jonathan Hickman — handing the flagship title to writer Gerry Duggan and artist Pepe Larraz after Hickman's departure. The issue deliberately pivots the X-Men back toward traditional Marvel superheroism, re-embedding Cyclops and his team into the broader Marvel Universe after years of semi-sovereign isolation on Krakoa, a shift underlined by members of the Avengers and Fantastic Four appearing to welcome the team at issue's end. It introduces three new villains — Feilong, Doctor Stasis, and Cordyceps Jones — all of whom become central antagonists across the wider Krakoan line, meaning this single issue seeds much of the dramatic architecture that would carry through to the Fall of X. The series it launched ran 35 issues and became the connective spine of both the Reign of X and Destiny of X publishing eras.

History

The issue's creative context is inseparable from the 2021 Hellfire Gala, Marvel's 12-part line-wide crossover that announced Krakoa's new team and terraformed Mars into Planet Arakko. Marvel conducted a real-world fan election in January 2021, asking readers to vote for the final roster spot from ten candidates; Polaris won, and the full seven-member lineup — Cyclops, Marvel Girl, Rogue, Wolverine (Laura Kinney), Synch, Sunfire, and Polaris — was revealed in April 2021 ahead of the July 7 on-sale date. The issue reunited Duggan with Larraz, who had drawn the foundational House of X and X of Swords events, and the creative team was completed by colorist Marte Gracia and letterer Clayton Cowles, whose work on the early issues earned a 2022 Eisner Award nomination for Best Lettering. A suite of connecting Stormbreaker variant covers was also released as an explicit homage to the connecting gatefold covers of the landmark 1991 X-Men #1 by Chris Claremont and Jim Lee.

First appearance of Feilong (Kelvin Heng), a billionaire industrialist and Orchis-allied antagonist whose grudge against Krakoa for terraforming Mars before him drives much of the Duggan run and later crossover into the Invincible Iron Man (2022) series.
First appearance of Doctor Stasis, revealed across the run to be a clone of Nathaniel Essex (Mister Sinister) serving as Orchis's Director of Human Resources, and a key villain in the Sins of Sinister crossover.
