History

Marvel 2099 editor Joey Cavalieri, working with editor-in-chief Tom DeFalco and executive editor Mark Gruenwald, conceived X-Men 2099 as a way to benefit from the X-Men brand without entangling the new imprint in the creative upheaval surrounding the mainline X-books in 1993 — a period when foundational writers and superstar artists had departed for Image Comics. John Francis Moore, already at work on Doom 2099, was tapped to write the series from its October 1993 launch through its final issue, making him the sole writer across all 35 issues; Ron Lim served as the principal penciller for nearly the entire run. The first issue's premiere story, 'The Gathering,' debuted the full founding roster simultaneously, introduced the villain organization the Synge Corporation, and shipped with a blue foil cover on cardstock — a production choice typical of the speculator-era early 1990s. After 35 issues, the series was cancelled in 1996 amid the broader collapse of the Marvel 2099 imprint, with the team folded into the anthology title 2099: World of Tomorrow.
