X-Factor #33
X-Factor #33 marks the story debut of both Darwin (Armando Muñoz) and Longshot as recurring members of Peter David's X-Factor Investigations cast, expanding a tight noir ensemble with two very different mutant temperaments — Darwin's reactive evolution and Longshot's probability-bending luck — that would reshape the team's dynamic for years. It also delivers the first full appearance of Hector Muñoz, Darwin's father, whose seemingly heartfelt search for his son sets up one of the run's most quietly devastating betrayal arcs. As a Secret Invasion tie-in, the issue threads a line-wide Skrull plot organically into X-Factor's street-level detective world, using the imposter 'Longshot' (actually the Skrull Talisman Nogor) to put both teams at cross-purposes in a collision that spotlights David's knack for character-driven action over event spectacle. The issue also introduced readers to Boo Cook as cover artist and Larry Stroman as interior penciller, marking a notable creative-team transition at the midpoint of David's celebrated long run on the title.
In "The Darwin Awards," X-Factor Investigations takes on a new case when Armando Munoz's father hires them to find his missing son in Detroit. As Longshot and Darwin (Armando) clash with local residents in the city's streets, their search leads them to unexpected allies—Jazinda and She-Hulk—setting the stage for a tense, character-driven mission. Written by Peter David and illustrated by Larry Stroman, with inks by Jon Sibal, colors by Jeromy Cox, and letters by VC's Cory Petit, the issue features a cover by Boo Cook.

Peter David deliberately recruited Longshot and Darwin to fill roster gaps created by the departures of Rahne Sinclair and Layla Miller, choosing Longshot for the optimism his luck powers project and Darwin because the character's relatively sparse prior characterization gave David maximum creative latitude. The reunion of David and penciller Larry Stroman — who had previously collaborated on the early-1990s government-sponsored X-Factor series — was a pointed callback for longtime readers, though the pairing drew widely divided reactions, with many fans finding Stroman's stylized 2008 work a steep departure from his earlier form. The arc was shaped in part by Marvel's line-wide Secret Invasion editorial mandate, which David navigated by keeping the Skrull element grounded in X-Factor's Detroit street milieu and tying it to the simultaneous She-Hulk series he was also writing at the time.

- First appearance of Hector Muñoz, Darwin's estranged father, who hires X-Factor Investigations to locate his son — a client relationship later revealed as a treacherous setup to sell Darwin to the Karma Project.
- First issue in which Darwin (Armando Muñoz) and Longshot are woven into the X-Factor Investigations storyline as prospective new team members, setting the stage for their formal joining of the roster.
- The 'Longshot' accompanying Darwin on Detroit streets is revealed to be Nogor the Talisman, a Skrull imposter — a plot point that connects the issue to Marvel's 2008 Secret Invasion crossover event.
- She-Hulk (Jennifer Walters) and her Skrull companion Jazinda cross over from Peter David's concurrent She-Hulk series to pursue Nogor, putting them at odds with X-Factor Investigations in a case of mistaken agenda; the story continues directly in She-Hulk (vol. 2) #31.
- Val Cooper (Valerie Cooper) eavesdrops on X-Factor's intake conversation with Hector Muñoz and uses the name 'Armando Muñoz' to identify Darwin, deepening O.N.E.'s surveillance subplot running through the series.
- Larry Stroman's return to X-Factor interior art was a deliberate reunion with writer Peter David, who had originally worked with Stroman on the early-1990s Pentagon-sponsored X-Factor run — making this issue a creative homecoming of sorts.
- The issue and its immediate follow-ups were collected in X-Factor Vol. 6: Secret Invasion (hardcover and trade paperback, both 2009), which also reprints She-Hulk (vol. 2) #31 to present the full crossover.
