About this Issue

Wonder Woman (vol. 2) #105 marks the first appearance of Cassandra 'Cassie' Sandsmark, the second character to carry the Wonder Girl name after Donna Troy, making it one of the most consequential character introductions in the Wonder Woman franchise since the post-Crisis relaunch. Cassie would go on to become a founding member of Young Justice, a co-leader of the Teen Titans, and one of DC's most enduring teenage superheroines — her debut here set the table for over two decades of stories exploring mentorship, divine heritage, and the burden of legacy. The issue also introduces Dr. Helena Sandsmark, whose relationship with both Diana and Cassie would anchor the emotional core of John Byrne's Gateway City era. Structurally, #105 serves as the epilogue to the 'Second Genesis' arc and the prologue to 'Lifelines,' bridging two major story chapters of Byrne's run at a pivotal narrative hinge point.

History

John Byrne took over Wonder Woman as sole writer and artist beginning with issue #101 (1995), relocating Diana from Boston to Gateway City — a setting he deliberately modeled on San Francisco — as part of a broader effort to refresh her supporting cast and ground her in a new civilian identity. Issue #105 arrived four issues into that relocation, published with a cover date of January 10, 1996, and edited by Paul Kupperberg and Jason Hernandez-Rosenblatt. Byrne handled full pencils, inks, and script duties himself, with Patricia Mulvihill providing colors; the self-contained creative control was characteristic of his approach across this run. The story grew organically from Diana's job-seeking visit to the Gateway City Museum of Cultural Antiquities, where Byrne planted both Helena Sandsmark and her daughter Cassie as the new civilian anchor relationships — a deliberate parallel to the Julia and Vanessa Kapatelis family he had displaced from the previous era.
