Written by Paul Jenkins and Bill Jemas with art by Andy Kubert, it follows the sickly boy James Howlett through a traumatic childhood that awakens his mutant powers and sets him on the path to becoming the feral hero known as Logan. The story strips away decades of mystery to present a definitive, tragic origin for one of Marvel's most iconic characters.
In "The Hill," a pivotal chapter of Wolverine: The Origin, a young James Logan confronts the brutal consequences of his family’s entanglement with the Howletts. Written by Paul Jenkins, Bill Jemas, and Joe Quesada, with striking art by Andy Kubert and colors by Richard Isanove, this 2002 issue explores the violent origins of a man whose past is etched in blood and betrayal. Cover by Joe Quesada captures the raw tension of a moment that will define a legend.

Dog is making unwelcome advances toward Rose when he is interrupted by James, who runs to tell his father. In retaliation, Dog kills James' pet puppy, which gets both him and his father thrown off of the Howlett estate. Feeling that he has been treated unfairly, Thomas Logan forces Rose to help him sneak into the Howlett bedchamber. John finds Thomas attempting to abduct his wife and interferes. Drawn by the commotion, James arrives just in time to see Thomas shoot his father in the head. As James goes after Thomas, bone claws emerge from the back of his hands and he stabs Thomas to death.
