About this Issue

Wolverine and Kitty Pryde #2 (2025) is the second chapter of Chris Claremont's self-described 'interquel' — a five-issue limited series set in the continuity gap between the final panel of the 1984–85 Kitty Pryde and Wolverine mini-series and the duo's return to the X-Men in Uncanny X-Men #192. That forty-year-old gap had never been addressed in-canon, making the series — and each of its issues — a genuine piece of retroactive X-Men history authored by the writer who created it. Issue #2 introduces the Snow Samurai, a new supernatural antagonist whose appearance deepens the mythological relationship between Wolverine, Mariko Yashida, and Kitty Pryde, and a mysterious artifact connected to Mariko's family ties those three characters together in ways previously unseen. As a Claremont-penned addition to the foundational Japan arc that turned Kitty Pryde into Shadowcat, this issue carries the weight of both canonical expansion and character legacy.

History

The broader series was announced on January 21, 2025, with Claremont describing it as the story of what happened between the close of the original mini-series and the characters' reappearance in Uncanny X-Men. Editor Mark Basso framed the project around two standing narrative mysteries: why Kitty's emotional state was so dramatically different upon returning to the X-Men, and what became of her father Carmen Pryde during that period. Damian Couceiro, whose prior Marvel work included X-Men Unlimited and Groot, was selected as interior artist, while veteran X-Men artist Alan Davis was brought on to provide covers across all five issues — a pairing designed to give the series a visual bridge between the classic Claremont era and the modern day. Issue #2 shipped on May 28, 2025, with a final-order cutoff of April 28, 2025.

  • A mysterious artifact recovered during the Snow Samurai encounter is identified by Mariko as a long-held Yashida family heirloom; its figures depict Logan, Kitty, and Mariko in ancient Japanese attire — tying a paranormal shared past to their present.
  • The series is canonically set between Kitty Pryde and Wolverine #6 (1985) and Uncanny X-Men #192, per an editor's note on the credits page, making it official retroactive Marvel continuity.
  • Three variant covers were published for issue #2: the standard Alan Davis cover, a Nicoletta Baldari variant, and a 1:25 retailer incentive variant by Rickie Yagawa.
  • The parent series directly continues from the 1984–85 Claremont/Milgrom Kitty Pryde and Wolverine limited series, which was itself the story that established Kitty's codename Shadowcat and her definitive costume — context that gives this issue its retroactive narrative weight.
