Witchblade Hors Série #1 (1997) kicks off with a haunting moment: Annabella, under the protection of a priest who betrays her, discovers a birthmark marking her as the next queen of Sicily. As Raimondo races to Emperor Gualtiero with this secret, Annabella confronts the monks and the mysterious Witchblade, taking up the gauntlet to defend her sanctuary from an encroaching army. Written by David Finch, David Wohl, and Christina Z, with art by Finch and Billy Tan and inks by a stellar lineup including Matt Banning and Joe Weems, this issue blends gothic tension and supernatural stakes. The cover by Tony S. Daniel and Kevin Conrad captures the dark, brooding atmosphere perfectly.

When Annabella is sexually assaulted by the priest who is supposed to be acting as her guardian, it is revealed that she carries a birthmark identifying her as the next queen of Sicily. Raimondo flees to Emperor Gualtiero and tells him this piece of news as he promises to procure him entrance to the island monastery where Annabella is staying. When Annabella witnesses the monks disfiguring themselves in trying to wield a mysterious gauntlet, she takes up the Witchblade herself and defends her home from Gualtiero's attacking forces.
