When Annabella is sexually assaulted by the priest who is supposed to be acting as her guardian, it is revealed that she carries a birthmark identifying her as the next queen of Sicily. Raimondo flees to Emperor Gualtiero and tells him this piece of news as he promises to procure him entrance to the island monastery where Annabella is staying. When Annabella witnesses the monks disfiguring themselves in trying to wield a mysterious gauntlet, she takes up the Witchblade herself and defends her home from Gualtiero's attacking forces.
