“The Thing in Cell 13”

In "The Thing in Cell 13," Stan Lee and Steve Ditko deliver a sharp, surreal twist on bureaucracy and power, where a corrupt police chief’s vanity leads him to build a massive, pointless prison just to boost his image. When he imprisons a random passerby on a whim, the man’s true identity—hidden in plain sight—unravels in a way that leaves the chief utterly exposed. The story’s eerie tone and unexpected turn are brought to life by Ditko’s distinctive art and Ray Holloway’s crisp lettering, while the cover by Larry Lieber, John Romita, and Al Milgrom captures the tale’s unsettling mood.

A corrupt police chief uses frivolous fines to fund a giant useless prison in order to increase his own prestige. He imprisons a passerby for no reason, but is shocked to find that he is the leader of a group of aliens who are in such a rush to leave that they take the whole prison when they cannot open his cell, leaving the chief disgraced and humbled.
