"His Private War" follows Private Mike Graham, a soldier bitter about his military service and resenting his draft despite his capability as a soldier. When Graham is promoted to staff sergeant and put in charge of training new recruits, his negative attitude persists, though he performs his duties competently. Assigned to lead a patrol with radio operator Wilson to observe enemy artillery positions during combat operations in Korea, Graham's resentment continues even as the two soldiers work together under fire, observing a concentration of enemy forces and preparing to report their findings back to headquarters.
