About this Issue

Vicarious #4 serves as the penultimate chapter of Ryan Parrott's first creator-owned original series at BOOM! Studios — a meaningful milestone for a writer who had previously worked exclusively on licensed properties such as Mighty Morphin Power Rangers at the publisher. The issue deepens the series' central meditation on identity, duality, and the commodification of lived experience, pushing protagonist Justin Bright to a moral crossroads from which the official solicit warns he may never return — the kind of character-defining pivot that gives limited series their narrative spine. As the fourth installment of a tight five-issue run, it represents Parrott and artist Eleonora Carlini operating at the height of their collaborative creative vision before the story's conclusion, continuing a book that critics of the contemporary BOOM! Studios imprint noted as one of its more ambitious original bets of the 2024–2025 publishing season.

History

Vicarious was announced by BOOM! Studios in July 2024 as part of a 'Road to San Diego Comic-Con' reveal, marking Parrott's debut as a creator-owned comics writer after years of work on licensed franchises. Parrott has described the core concept — what it would feel like to literally see through someone else's eyes and feel what they feel — as an idea he kept returning to before pitching it to BOOM!, where the publisher's editorial guidance helped shape it into a neo-noir psychological thriller dealing with identity and the value of human experience. The creative team brought together Parrott and artist Eleonora Carlini, who had previously collaborated on BOOM!'s Go Go Power Rangers, with colorist Mattia Iacono (with color assistance by Luca Mattioni) and letterer Becca Carey rounding out the production crew — the same team that carried all five issues through to completion.
