About this Issue

Vicarious #5 is the concluding chapter of Ryan Parrott's first creator-owned original comic series — a milestone for a writer who had previously worked exclusively on licensed and work-for-hire properties throughout his career. As the finale of a tightly constructed five-issue limited series, it brings to a close a near-future neo-noir narrative about identity, class exploitation, and the commodification of human experience, themes that place it squarely in conversation with contemporary science fiction's most pressing cultural anxieties. The series as a whole represents BOOM! Studios' continued investment in prestige original sci-fi storytelling, and this issue caps a complete, self-contained story that was designed for the trade paperback format from the outset — a model increasingly central to how the direct market sustains original IP.

History

Vicarious was announced at San Diego Comic-Con 2024 as a five-issue limited series, with Parrott describing the core concept as something that had been developing in his mind long before he pitched it to BOOM! Studios. Parrott and artist Eleonora Carlini had previously collaborated extensively at BOOM! on the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers line, making Vicarious a reunion of an established creative partnership now working on their own IP. Carlini, an Italian artist who debuted in the U.S. in 2015, brought a visual philosophy to the series that she described as pushing aesthetics toward 'grotesque and linear graphic codes' intended to convey the sensation of inhabiting another person's experience — a deliberate formal choice in service of the story's central conceit.
