Vicarious #3
☆ Be the first to review + Add to your collection — Join freeVicarious #3 is the narrative turning point of a five-issue limited series that critics and readers recognized as one of the sharper original sci-fi concepts of 2024 in the direct market. Where earlier issues established the seductive premise of "Proxies" — young people who sell rich clients experiential access to their bodies via a technological implant — issue #3 is where Parrott deliberately destabilizes that premise, revealing for the first time that Proxies are just as willing to exploit and weaponize each other as their wealthy clients are, a structural pivot that transforms the story from a class-anxiety thriller into something more morally labyrinthine. The series sits squarely within BOOM! Studios' growing catalog of creator-owned, socially engaged sci-fi — alongside titles like Something Is Killing the Children and A Vicious Circle — and represents Parrott's debut as a creator-owner at the publisher he had long worked for in a work-for-hire capacity.

The series was announced as part of BOOM! Studios' "Road to San Diego Comic-Con" publicity campaign in July 2024, with writer Ryan Parrott and artist Eleonora Carlini both credited as co-creators — a meaningful distinction given that Vicarious marks Parrott's first original comic at BOOM! Studios, where he had previously written Mighty Morphin Power Rangers as a licensed work. Parrott and Carlini had already built a strong working rapport on Go Go Power Rangers at the same publisher, making Vicarious a natural next step for the creative pairing. Colorist Mattia Iacono and cover artist Dan Panosian completed the core production team; the series was structured as a tight five-issue limited run from the outset, with issue #3 shipping December 18, 2024, the midpoint of that run.
Trivia · 8 facts
- Issue #3 (of 5) shipped December 18, 2024 from BOOM! Studios, written by Ryan Parrott with art by Eleonora Carlini and colors by Mattia Iacono.
- The issue is the series midpoint and the narrative crux where protagonist Justin — now established as a Proxy — is shown that Proxies themselves hire and exploit other Proxies, expanding the series' social commentary beyond a simple rich-vs.-poor dynamic.
- The solicitation describes Justin 'pulling a con' in this issue, marking the first time the story puts its lead character in a fully active, deceptive role rather than a reactive one.
- The series was formally described in marketing materials as 'Saltburn meets Eat the Rich,' positioning it as class-critique science fiction with neo-noir aesthetics.
- Vicarious is Ryan Parrott's debut creator-owned original comic — his prior BOOM! Studios work (Mighty Morphin Power Rangers) was licensed intellectual property.
- Eleonora Carlini, a Rome-born artist, co-created the book and brought a deliberately 'grotesque and linear' graphic vocabulary to convey the sensation of inhabiting another person's sensory experience.
- Issue #3 carried four cover variants: Cover A by Dan Panosian, Cover B by Miss Reliah, a 1:10 incentive Dan Panosian virgin variant, and a 1:15 Becca Carey variant.
- The complete five-issue series was subsequently collected in a trade paperback (ISBN 9798892153850), confirming the run concluded as planned.
