After three years of waiting for security before he'll marry her, Ann is losing patience with Hugh. One night when Hugh has to work late, Ann goes to a dance and meets Nigel, who is the opposite of Hugh. After meeting Nigel, Ann decides that she wants a husband with romance and adventure in his soul. She writes a goodbye note to Hugh and his mother leaves it on the living room table. As she turns away, Hugh approaches her with news that he is being transferred to Canada with a big raise and can marry her. While he shows her on the map where they will be, she destroys the note.
