Ultimate Spider-Man #8
Ultimate Spider-Man #8 (August 2024) marks the first full team appearance of the new Ultimate Universe Sinister Six — a radically reconceived villain ensemble in which Wilson Fisk/Kingpin serves as the organizer rather than the usual Doctor Octopus, with each lieutenant controlling a different New York City borough. The issue also delivers the first in-universe appearance of this continuity's Mysterio, presented here as a collective identity whose true nature would prove central to the series' long-form plotting. Arriving almost exactly sixty years after the original Sinister Six debuted in 1964's Amazing Spider-Man Annual #1, the issue explicitly honors that anniversary while inverting virtually every structural expectation of the classic team. It also plants a key dramatic seed — Tony Stark/Iron Lad revealing to Harry Osborn that he was never intended to be a superhero — that foreshadows Harry's later arc as the series progressed.

The issue is part of Jonathan Hickman and Marco Checchetto's ongoing Ultimate Spider-Man (Vol. 3), which launched in January 2024 as the flagship title of Marvel's new Ultimate Universe imprint (Earth-6160), itself growing out of Hickman's prior Ultimate Invasion miniseries with artist Bryan Hitch. The new Ultimate line was conceived as a clean-slate alternate continuity — distinct from the original 2000–2015 Ultimate Marvel run — set in a world where the Maker had suppressed the rise of superheroes. Issue #8 falls in the second arc ('The Paper,' collected in Ultimate Spider-Man Vol. 2), with Checchetto handling both pencils and inks and Matthew Wilson on colors; Marvel's variant cover for the issue was drawn by Lee Garbett, with a further variant by Luciano Vecchio showcasing Checchetto's newly designed Sinister Six.
