About this Issue

Issue #6 closes the opening arc of Jonathan Hickman and Marco Checchetto's Earth-6160 reinvention of Spider-Man with two character-defining moments that reshape classic mythology: Mary Jane Watson-Parker coins the name 'Spider-Man' for her husband, inverting the tradition of the hero naming himself, and Peter fully reveals his secret identity to his family — a deliberate narrative rebuke of decades of Marvel's 'One More Day'-era secrecy plotting. The issue also firmly establishes Harry Osborn's 'Green Goblin' codename as self-chosen rather than villainy-inherited, flipping one of the most tragic arcs in Spider-Man history into a heroic partnership. Together these beats signal that Hickman's run is willing to resolve in six issues what mainstream continuity has used as indefinite tension for sixty years.

History

The series was conceived as the flagship launch of Marvel's new Ultimate Universe imprint (Earth-6160), itself born from Hickman and Bryan Hitch's 2023 miniseries *Ultimate Invasion*. Editor Wil Moss shepherded the project and initially approached Chip Zdarsky to write it; Zdarsky turned the offer down, recognizing the outline as quintessentially Hickman's vision and recommending Hickman take the reins himself. Hickman has stated that the series executed exactly as he originally pitched it, with nothing deviating from his initial plan — a level of authorial control unusual for a Big Two ongoing title.

Trivia · 8 facts

  • Written by Jonathan Hickman; art, inks, and cover by Marco Checchetto; colors by Matthew Wilson; letters by VC's Cory Petit; edited by Wil Moss.
  • Published June 19, 2024 (cover-dated August 2024); 32 pages; rated T.
  • Concludes the six-issue opening arc — the first complete storyline of the relaunched Ultimate Universe imprint.
  • Mary Jane Watson-Parker gives Peter the name 'Spider-Man' on the final page, making her — not the press or Peter himself — the origin of the hero's codename in this continuity.
  • Peter reveals his secret identity to MJ and their son Richard in this issue; daughter May already knew, as established earlier in the arc.
  • Harry Osborn formally adopts 'Green Goblin' as his own codename after Peter notes the press already calls him that — cementing his heroic (not villainous) use of the identity on Earth-6160.
  • Wilson Fisk/Kingpin — established here as owner and operator of the Daily Bugle and a member of the Maker's Council power structure — admits to having undergone physical enhancement, and decisively defeats both Spider-Man and Green Goblin in a cage-fight confrontation.
  • The issue received a second printing, with a 1:25 Marco Checchetto virgin variant and a Takeshi Miyazawa cover among the second-print editions; variant covers for the first printing included art by David Marquez and Chris Samnee.
