Ultimate Spider-Man #13

The issue simultaneously debuts the Ultimate Universe's version of the Savage Land as a narrative location and visually introduces a black-suited Spider-Man whose picotech design consciously echoes the symbiote aesthetic, foreshadowing Richard's later role as an Ultimate Venom. As a deliberate homage to 'Kraven's Last Hunt,' Jonathan Hickman and Marco Checchetto reframe one of Spider-Man's most celebrated classic storylines through the lens of a middle-aged, married Peter Parker — deepening the series' central thesis that superheroics have real costs for an entire family, not just an individual.
In "January," Jonathan Hickman and Marco Checchetto launch a tense, high-stakes chapter where Kraven's deadly game escalates, targeting Peter and Harry in a hunt that blurs the line between predator and prey. As Peter's son Richard dons a black Spider-Man suit—guided by an enigmatic A.I.—he steps into a world of shadows, chasing his father’s trail with a determination that feels both personal and inevitable.

The series was conceived by writer Jonathan Hickman and artist Marco Checchetto as the debut title of Marvel's second Ultimate Universe imprint (Earth-6160), launched in January 2024. Hickman has stated that his version of Peter Parker was inspired by the older, married Spider-Man seen in the Spider-Verse animated films, deliberately inverting the classic 'young hero' premise. Richard Parker II as a character was co-created by Hickman and Checchetto and first introduced in the series' debut issue before being elevated to the Spider-Man role in issue #13, a development Hickman has described as part of his fully plotted, pre-planned story structure for the run.

- First in-story appearance of the Ultimate Savage Land: a prehistoric, dinosaur-populated subterranean environment located beneath Manhattan, distinct from the classic Antarctic Savage Land.
- The black-suited Spider-Man costume worn by Richard visually references Venom's distinctive eye design, seeding the suit's later revelation as the Ultimate Universe's equivalent of the Venom symbiote.
- Black Cat (Felicia Hardy) appears as an antagonist confronting the black-suited Richard, seeking revenge against Spider-Man for injuries inflicted on her father earlier in the run.
- Issue #13 opens the series' second story arc and represents the first time the ongoing series places a non-Peter-Parker character in the Spider-Man role, expanding Hickman's stated 'family affair' thematic framework.
