History

The series was launched in early 2024 as part of Marvel's second-wave Ultimate Universe initiative, with writer Bryan Hill — previously known for Killmonger, Detective Comics, and Batman & the Outsiders — and series artist Stefano Caselli building out the Earth-6160 version of Wakanda from scratch, including wholly new takes on T'Challa, Storm, and Killmonger. Issue #16 was produced with Carlos Nieto as the interior penciller and inker, handling alternating arc duties alongside Caselli — a rotating-artist arrangement the series employed throughout — with David Curiel on colors and Cory Petit on letters; Wilson Moss served as editor. The cover was provided by Caselli, maintaining visual brand consistency across issues where Nieto handled interiors.

The issue is NOT the first appearance of the Progenitor — that distinction belongs to Ultimate Black Panther #13 (released February 2025); issue #16 features a significant second appearance of a Progenitor entity (Z'Non), and issue #17 later reveals that the differing appearances in #13 and #16 are explained by there being multiple Progenitors.
Ultimate Storm (Ororo Munroe, Earth-6160) first appeared in Ultimate Black Panther #1 (February 2024), created by Bryan Hill, Stefano Caselli, and Peach Momoko; she is characterized as a mutant freedom fighter and partner of Killmonger, distinct in nationality and temperament from her Earth-616 counterpart.
The story continues directly from issue #15, with T'Challa and Storm investigating a murder in Nigeria connected to a CIA agent undertaking covert missions in Wakanda — the first explicit introduction of a CIA subplot into the series.
A central narrative development in this issue is Z'Non (the Progenitor) confronting T'Challa and Storm and claiming that both will help destroy Wakanda, while also delivering a revelation about what qualifies T'Challa's lineage to bear the Black Panther mantle.
Hill's treatment of Vibranium in this arc — framing it as a living, cosmic consciousness rather than a passive metal — represents a meaningful conceptual departure from both Earth-616 and Earth-1610 Black Panther mythology.
