“Smuggler's Blues”

In "Smuggler's Blues," the first issue of Trekker from 1987, writer and artist Ron Randall introduces a gritty, high-stakes tale set in the city of New Gelaph. Bounty hunter Mercy St. Clair closes in on the rebel leader Stravin and his underground network, the P.U.A., after a botched smuggling run leaves two cops dead. With the government cracking down on the transport of small animals—key to a potential food revolution—Stravin's choices and the true cost of resistance come into sharp focus. The story unfolds with a raw, grounded intensity, all rendered in bold, distinctive artwork by Ron Randall, whose dynamic pencils and inks bring the world to life. The cover, also by Randall, captures the tension with a striking, noir-inspired image.
